Melissa Cohen-White

Age: 41

Home town: Anywhere my bicycle will take me, but currently somewhere between Dundas, Ontario and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Occupation: Architect

Past history of sports participation : A variety of sports participation over the years, including: Junior Recreational Hockey Team, Cal Poly Fencing Team - 1988 to 1993, Cal Poly Ultimate Frisbee IM Team - IM Champions 1992, 1993, Cuesta College 50K Biathlon - 1993. Cal Poly Wheelmen Cycling Team - 1994. Most recently sprint distance Duathlons, 5K and 10K races, along with Metric Century and Century distance bicycle events - 2006 to 2009.

Primary athletic focus currently: I'm moving my cycling into the hills (after living in Florida for the last 15 years) and my running onto the trails, so just focusing on training and adjusting to a new area this year.

Favorite training or racing experiences: Finally finishing my first Century, solo and breaking 60 min. in the 10K, in 2009, along with the privilege of being trained by Coach over the last few years. Also looking back, riding with the Cal Poly Cycling Team was a great joy.

Races/events completed this year: Races/events completed in 2009 include: Orlando 10k, MCW's Solo Century, and Niagara 5k.

Favorite race/s: I enjoy them all, the people, the energy.

Personal Records/Best races: I'm getting there.

Athletic achievement/s you are most proud of: This goes back to university when I was fencing. Fencing is a huge mental game. In one competition I finally got outside of myself and beat my most difficult opponent…me, and I was able to get to the final round of competition. All of the matches felt as if they were in slow motion and I was in control of everything. When I sense myself getting out of my way in training or racing that is when I am most proud.

Goals for the coming year/season: Working on flexibility for both body and mind, in order to feel more relaxed during training. Dialing in my nutrition, during training, in order to feel confident for the work ahead.

Races you are planning on next season: No races planned in 2010. Although, I hope to get in a cycling skills clinic/camp.

Favorite racing and/or training tip: Your ability to progress is directly related to your ability to let go and move past your defeats.

Additional comments/info: Being a cyclist in some form is a big part of me, so I'm encouraged by the longevity of the people I have met in the sport and also by the statement below: "I would hope that my career would show that with a serious approach and training and passion one can continue for a long time" Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli
